i've been thinking about art as an investment lately, but man, it seems like a gamble. yeah, it's got its charm. buying something beautiful, hoping its value shoots up. but then you hear stories, like someone dropping €450K on a piece and only getting back €125K a decade later. ouch. makes me wonder, is it worth the risk, or are there smarter ways to play the game? anyone here ever made it big investing in art? share your wins or cautionary tales.

As an art enthusiast for quite a while, I should tell you "don't do it!" lol. if it's for investment purpose, don't do it, bcs it's super high risk. buy the art piece to appriciate it.

nah, I don't buy that, art has always been a mix of passion and investment. Even centuries ago, wealthy patrons commissioned pieces as a status symbol. The market fluctuates, sure, but that's how value works in any collectible industry, if you're smart about it, art can still be a solid investment, just gotta know what you're doing

if you want to enjoy the art, get it, if you're looking to make profit from it you're better off investing in something else

Art as an investment? it's a damn vanity gamble unless you really know the game. look yeah, most of the time, you're buying a name, not value, and this €450K to €125K nosedive isn't rare, it's the rule, not the exception, so find something else to invest in that wont hang on your wall mocking you when they tank.

boy, i'm just tired of people making money out of art!! i respect it's your money but collecting for profit just makes art more exclusive!!

If you really wanna go down that road, always keep in mind that you should only invest an amount you are ready to lose. Second, buy art to appreciate it and its artists' effort and creativity.

As long as you do research, you wouldn't have art wasted. It really is an investment. Yes, it might go up and down through time. If your long-term purpose is keeping art, should that matter? I know that you said you're thinking of art as an investment but are you the type who wants to trade as a source of income or just in the future you plan to sell?

I think art prices is pretty much volatile, but if you enjoy art that much then go for it. Can never lose with art. Price goes up, then you can consider selling. If not then just collect. win - win

I think this about sums things up nicely. Art imho is about enjoying it and not worrying about how much you paid and how much it would be worth.
