Auction savings or gallery quality?

I've been carefully thinking, auctions seem like a better deal since theres less overhead, but galleries usually have a more thoughtful, curated selection. Auctions often feel like they're selling a lot of generic or decorative stuff. I want to support galleries but sometimes feel like I'm just paying for the name. What am I missing?

I understand what you mean. Auctions might look cheaper at first, but I've heard of buyers getting hit with surprise fees, like a 25% premium.

Galleries seem more expensive, but they pick the art carefully, check out the artists, and can grow value over time. A friend bought from a gallery; they paid extra, but got papers proving where it came from, and the artist's work ended up in a museum. It was worth it when they looked back.

Isn't it strange how the art world talks so much about supporting artists, yet galleries often take 50% while auctions, even if less curated, can sometimes get more money directly to the artist or their estate?
